Copernicus Climate Change Service

The generation and the delivery of long term Climate Data Records describing the evolution of Essential Climate Variables (ECV) are performed by several consortia in the Copernicus Climate Change Service. In Phase 2 (2018-2021), the consortium C3S_Lot5, led by VITO, is in charge of the surface albedo, Fraction of Absorbed Photosynthetically Active Radiation (FAPAR), Leaf Area Index (LAI), land cover, fire, burnt areas and fire radiative power (FRP). Its concept consists in:

  • maximizing the exploitation of the scientific expertise from ESA CCI projects and operational expertise within the Copernicus Global Land Service (CGLS)
  • securing the continuation of the products by moving towards Sentinel-3 as primary data source by linking with CGLS
  • make important steps towards cross-CDR consitency by harmonizing the pre-processing and implement operational tools to monitor the CDRs quality and their cross-consistency.

In the continuity of its involvment in Phase 1 (2017-2019), HYGEOS is participating in C3S_Lot5 consortium by:

  • the definition of atmospheric correction applied to various sensors data, including the propagation of uncertainties for the albedo, LAI and FAPAR products. The works performed in Phase 1 was presented at LPV 2018.
  • the contribution to the harmonization of the pre-processing for the atmospheric correction aspects.

Example on SPOT/VGT data. Extraction of 49x49 pixel bow around AERONET station of Ispra on 1st June 1999. Input TOA reflectances for each VGT band (top), interpolated auxiliary data (ozone, water vapor, surface pressure and aerosol optical thickness, 2nd row from left to right), ouput TOC spectral reflectances (3rd row) and their respective errors (bottom).
